About Student Finance Calculator
Helping UK students and graduates make sense of their student loans since 2020. Free, independent, and updated frequently.
👋 Who Runs This Site?
Hi, I am a UK university graduate (graduated in 2020) and the sole developer of the Student Finance Calculator. Like many graduates, when I completed my studies, my elusive student debt suddenly became very real. With various plans, rates, thresholds, and repayment periods, I found myself asking questions like: When do I start paying? How much will come out of my account? How long will I be paying this for? How much will all of this come to? It was immediately clear that my newfound debt was very different from traditional loans (such as a car loan). Typical debt tools did not help, and other tools did not provide the granularity I was looking for.
I built Student Finance Calculator to solve this exact problem. Although it has become more of an exploratory tool (since forecasting anything 30 to 40 years out is borderline impossible), I have found that having a ballpark figure around potential repayments helps me rationalise other financial decisions with confidence. I run, update, and maintain this site entirely by myself with help from volunteers and friends with specific domain expertise. I am completely independent, meaning I have no affiliation with any university, student loan body, lender, or government agency.
I manually review and cross-reference every threshold, interest rate, and tuition limit against official GOV.UK, SLC, SAAS, and SFNI publications every single month. My calculators are built around the exact mathematical repayment models set out by the government. I want to help you make sense of your student finance so you can budget, compare job offers, or plan overpayments confidently. However, because transparency is critical when dealing with personal finances, I am the first to say that this tool is NOT a substitute for official financial advice (such as from a qualified adviser). Please always do your own research on official government sites because, while I try my best, rates and thresholds are always changing and your particular circumstances might be different from those this tool was intended for.
