Plan 1 Student Loan: Common Questions

How much do I repay on a Plan 1 student loan?
You repay 9% of everything you earn above £24,990 a year. On a £35,000 salary that works out to roughly £67 a month. Earn below £24,990 and you pay nothing at all.
When is a Plan 1 student loan written off?
Plan 1 loans are written off 25 years after you became eligible to repay, which for most people is the April after graduating. Loans taken out before 2006 follow different rules and may be written off when you turn 65.
What is the Plan 1 interest rate?
Interest on Plan 1 is whichever is lower: the RPI rate or the Bank of England base rate plus 1%. That cap keeps Plan 1 interest well below what Plan 2 borrowers pay. The current rate is 3.2%.
Do I still have a Plan 1 loan if I started before 2012?
Yes. Anyone who started an undergraduate course in England or Wales before September 2012 is on Plan 1. The same applies if you studied at any time in Northern Ireland. You can confirm your plan on the Student Loans Company website.
